A hallmark of the Black Swan Academy are the unique opportunities youth have to engage in programming designed to not only enhance their PRIDE in themselves and their communities, but to help them discover their PURPOSE and ignite their POWER so that they can be change agents today and in the future. These leading principles of BSA are weaved into all of our initiatives and the annual Youth Civic Leadership Summit is no different.
Our Summit is a half day experience for middle and high school students to regain a sense of pride, purpose, and power. Youth LEARN from well-known leaders, EXPLORE careers from all sectors through hands-on workshops, ADVOCATE on issues important to them and ultimately DISCOVER the leader within them.
Held at Sousa Middle School this year, nearly 300 black youth heard from and worked alongside black elected officials, entrepreneurs, artists, community organizers, lawyers and scientists. Among the civic leaders included were Andre McCain, 29 year old Washingtonian and Owner of Shaw’s Half Smoke and Wanda Lockridge, Non-Profit Executive and Chief of Staff for the Honorable Trayon White (Ward 8 Councilmember). The day’s activities all circled back to the importance of civic leadership. Our emerging leaders now know that regardless of their path, they each have a responsibility to serve and lift up their own stories and those of their community.
