Counselor/Mentor (http://www.idealist.org/view/volop/32bC6B7JtNw8d/)

We are seeking passionate counselors, who are committed to encouraging and assisting students to develop his/her full potential. Counselors assist in the implementation of the curriculum; including planning/participating in community service activities and advocacy efforts. Most importantly counselors are expected to be positive role models to the youth. This position is not paid, however a transportation stipend may be offered. Counselors are expected to attend required trainings and work 4-8 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Lead Instructor in the execution of lesson plan;
  • Assist in the planning of Community Service activities;
  • Participate in social justice advocacy efforts;
  • Facilitate smaller group activities and discussion;
  • Maintain consistent and direct interaction with youth;
  • Be a source of emotional support for youth and record/report any signs of emotional/mental distraught to appropriate staff;
  • Respond effectively to students;
  • Encourage independence yet offer support;
  • Act as a positive role model through actions and words

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth;
  • Interest in Social Justice;
    • Sensitivity to people of diverse educational, ethnic, and economic backgrounds;
    • Interest/Background in Social work, Education or Public Policy preferred
    • All volunteers MUST secure DCPS clearances;
